Children car safety restraints
NEW YORK — Every three minutes, someone dies in a car accident. But, since all 50 states now require car restraints for children, the number of kids dying in a car crash has been dramatically reduced.
Car accidents kill more kids between the ages of 3 and 14 than anything else. Recent statistics show that states with stronger child restraint laws, including booster seats which use the car’s seat belts for older kids, are saving more children.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released their latest recommendations. Using test dummies representing an average six year old, they were able to measure the effectiveness of each seat. Out of 83 booster seats evaluated, a record 31 seats were listed as “best bets,” meaning they were safe and effective. Five of the seats evaluated were “good bets” and six were not recommended.
The fit is important. Lap belts should lie flat across the child’s upper thighs and the shoulder belt cross snugly over the middle of the shoulder. Not using a seatbelt the right way with a booster seat can actually cause damage in a crash, including spine and internal organ injuries.

Officer Killed On LI Highway In Collison
A New York off-duty officer was killed when a drunk driver rear-ended him. The officers car was struck around 5:35 a.m. Sept 11th.
The officer was pronounced dead at Nassau University Medical Center, while his passenger, was released after being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The drunk driver rear-ended the victims vehicle.” The drunk driver was charged vehicular manslaughter in the 2nd degree, reckless driving, driving while intoxicated, and two counts of assault in the 3rd degree.

Here we go again, yet another bus crash carrying tourists is rear-ended by a tractor trailer killing one and injuring 30. Questions remain how did this turn pleasure trip go terribly wrong? What was the cause of this rear end collision? Was it excessive speed that lead to this deadly accident?
It has been suggested that driver fatigue suspected in this tour bus crash. It starting to get to the point where tourist are questioning that trip. Especially after the recent bus crashes that have left many injured and some dead. Driver need to be cautious, and really consider tractor trailer accident statistics.
We see large trucks on the highways that overpower the road with size and power. Drivers need to be alert when they see an 18-wheeler. Accidents can happen in a blink of an eye at any time, it is better to be safe than sorry.

JUNIUS PONDS, N.Y., July 22 (UPI) — A tractor-trailer rear ended a bus carrying tourists near Waterloo Premium Outlets on the New York State Thruway, killing one and injuring 30, officials said.
The 1:30 a.m. Friday accident left the driver of the truck, Timothy Hume, 59, of Dryden, Mich., dead at the scene, The (Syracuse) Post-Standard reported.
Two victims were flown by helicopter to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, and 15 others were transported by ambulance and 13 by private vehicle to area hospitals, state police Major Mark A. Koss said.
A soldier from Fort Drum helped get the 52 passengers and driver off the bus, which was en route from Welland, Ontario, Canada, to New York, Koss said.
The truck Hume was driving carried 14,000 pounds of automotive ball bearings. The bus and truck caught fire as a result of the accident and the bus was fully engulfed in flames when rescue crews arrived.
